Weed trimmer alternatives?

What is the point of weed trimmers, can't I just use large scissors or hedge cutters? If not, are there any cheaper alternatives I can use?

EDIT: I want to trim the weeds, not kill them.

    How’s your back? LOL!! Sure you can. If you got weeds in cracks of concrete or asphalt, use 5% vinegar. Just put it in a spray bottle and go to work. Vinegar is non selective so try not to spray grass or plants. The sure way to get most of the weeds is to pull them out. Entire piece and the root. scissors or hedge cutters and even weed whackers can’t do that.
    For my driveway I torch them to a crisp and hose whatever is left over.

    ya if you wanna be at it all day. weed trimmers are not that expensive.
